If there was one thing that I wish I could make parents and professionals understand...it's that Executive Function weaknesses occur at ALL levels of intelligence. Most assume however that average, above average and gifted children should have a great work ethic and the smarts enough to "have it all together." Some of the biggest myths are:
"He's just lazy." "She is manipulating you." "He could do it if he put his mind to it." "He just has selective memory." "You do too much for her. You're an enabler." A child who is bright may indeed have the intelligence to process and understand a task but lack the ability to: plan, control their impulses, regulate their emotions when frustrated, manage their time, organize what they need to complete the task, sequence the steps to complete the task and then get it turned in. So how do you help your bright child before they begin to have lifelong negative effects to their self esteem? *Find an Executive Function Coach who can help you determine if your child's difficulties are due to a true difficulty with the CONTENT {math, reading writing etc..} or the PROCESS {organizing, time management, attention etc..} *Along with an EF coach, implement a plan {based upon content or process} that in the short term keeps them moving forward and in the long term teaches them how to deal with future issues on their own with appropriate supports. Don't wait. Help your child NOW. The frustration you feel, guaranteed, is much less than what they feel. Schedule your FREE consult, today, to see how we can work together to help your child get on the road to success this school year. Jen
