Hi Everyone! Just a quick post to share an EASY, FUN, EASILY adaptable activity to use with your kiddos needing auditory processing help {truth be told this is a great activity for ALL children}. First, pick out a book that has a repeated word in it. Some of my favorites are Brown Bear Brown Bear {could use brown or bear}, The Very Hungry Caterpillar {could use eat or ate}, or a holiday book like The Hallo-Wiener {use Oscar or dog}. **Disclaimer on the last title-use with caution above the age of 7. :) Such a CUTE book though. Before beginning the story, tell the child to listen for the word you select. Then, decide together what the action should be when they hear the word. Giving them some "say" in the activity is so empowering for them and makes it more fun for them as well. Enjoy this video from my little friend and I using this activity in therapy yesterday. He got a little excited and tapped the table BEFORE hearing our word, Oscar! That's how you know a kid is engaged and EXCITED in your choice of activity. I left it in because you can literally SEE the excitement on his face. Isn't that FUN?! He did a great job too. This is also an excellent example of how sometimes, there will be a slightly delayed response when you are working on auditory skills...meaning you may see them respond a few seconds after you say the word. This can happen for several reasons: *True auditory processing weakness *Attention *Short term memory weakness *Executive function weakness What are some of your favorite stories that you might use? Leave me a comment and let me know. This will also give us a great list of books to use. If you haven't listened to my BlogTalk Radio show on Auditory Processing Dysfunction you can listen here: Listen to internet radio with Therapy and Learning Services on Blog Talk Radio As always, thanks for reading. Keep helping your kiddos BLOOM!
