If there was a top ten list of things that I work on with my study skills coaching clients, note taking would hold several of the spots on the list. This skill seems to be lacking in the majority of students and it is definitely lacking in the curriculum of middle and high schools across the nation. Having said that, note taking is also one of the biggest "bang for your buck" study skills that provides an almost instant return on your investment.
Some students can get by with less than stellar, or lack of, note taking in high school. Once they hit college, this doesn't cut the mustard however and they suffer the consequence of falling behind with the vast amount of information they are responsible for. Take 15 minutes to learn the basics of note taking. Begin IMMEDIATELY to take control of the overwhelming amount of information you need to remember in school and spend less time studying.

Ah, note taking. Such an important study skill that is elusive to so many students. Nothing makes me cringe more than to hear a student say "sure, I take notes. I copy what is on the chalkboard, whiteboard or overhead." It makes me scream if they follow it up with, "my teacher tells us to just copy down what they have written out."
NO. NO. NO. NO. Stop the madness please!! Good thing I planned an entire month of tips & tricks for better note taking because learning to take good notes is an extremely effective study skills strategy. It really will help you to study smarter, not harder. Don't miss a morsel by staying tuned in to the blog, joining our newsletter and subscribing to my BlogTalkRadio Show {on iTunes too!}.
